On September 4, 2011 wildfires broke out across drought-ridden Bastrop County in Texas. Eventually joining to become one massive fire, the Bastrop Complex Wildfire burned 1554 homes, including those of more than twenty homeschooling families.
Farrah, God bless you! Thank you so much! That is such an incredibly generous gift... we were worried about covering that one. If you are willing, would you send your address to wildfirehelp@yahoo.com? Again THANK YOU!
Thank you so much to our generous donors... We have crossed Horizons Math 2 Workbooks, MFW K Literature and Artistic Pursuits 2 off the list! We are so grateful!
I have a gently used like brand new IEW core I will send if you still need it. I have several other items packed away I can look through and then I will send these over the weekend. We are keeping you in our prayers. Mary
I was just about to take boxes of boys' clothes, sizes 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7, summer and winter, underwear to coats, to Goodwill. Is this anything the families can use?
I'm also going through our curriculum shelves, weeding out those items we no longer need. I've already discovered boxes of chalk, crayons and foam craft supplies, as well as handwriting practice sheets for pre-school and kindergarten and some early reader books.
I teach college-level history; can any of the families use college/high school-level anthologies of history primary sources? I have several I can send on.
Denise, would you send a list of the books you are willing to donate to wildfirehelp@yahoo.com? We can let you know what is still needed from your list. Thank you!
I will send Runaway Bunny, and pissibly some children's lit and educational games. I have Hour of the Olympics on CD. I will send that if the family can use it. Please let me know.
Regarding items we receive that are not on our "current needs" list:
We have set up a library of sorts... you could call it a free homeschooling store. I will be posting pictures of it on the blog soon. The families are free to come in and take whatever they need to rebuild their libraries. We anticipate this aspect of our effort to last for a while because few families have room for much yet; many are still in small temporary housing, and no one will be truly home soon.
Once all the families have had ample opportunity to take all that they would like, we plan to liquidate what remains, with all proceeds going to the families. We will prioritize financial assistance to those without insurance.
We are open to the possibility of shifting resources to other disaster relief areas. I am happy to say that the fire in San Marcos on Saturday was contained with no structure loss. There was another one there yesterday, one house lost.
Unfortunately things are dangerous throughout Central Texas - historic drought combined with strong winds means we remain on high alert. Within the Bastrop Wildfire perimeter there are small fires cropping up almost every day due to smoldering trees. The sound of fire planes and helicopters flying overhead has become normative (we live a mile outside the perimeter).
A Tale of three trees~ on its way from Amazon.com. I have boxes full of "1-subject " notebooks, is this something that could be used? If so, I will mail them today.
Quick prayers for Patti, please! A new fire has started not far from her! She and the two other moms behind this effort in Bastrop are doing God's work to help these families so devastated by fires. Please pray for their safety and the safety of their families, properties, emotions, etc. THANK YOU! Dana Wixson
